About the Department

Mahilaratna Pushpatai Hiray Arts, Science and Commerce Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Malegaon was established in June 1990. Bearing the Motto "Bahujan Hitay Bahujan Sukhay" 'Education for masses and their well- being' ' and impart educational facility to the women students to attain empowerment of women. The college is affiliated to the University of Pune. The college got UGC recognition under section 2(f) in June 1990 and under section 12(b) in July 2002.

The College is situated in a campus of 3 acres in the well-developed area of city of Malegaon, the Manchester of Maharashtra. The college offers three under graduate programs and 03 post graduate programs. There are 3 streams - Arts, Science and Commerce with Mental, Moral and Social Sciences as a part of Arts stream. The college provides education in 6 subjects under science stream, 09 subjects under Arts and 04 under commerce stream. Geography is offered under both Arts and Science streams.

About Department:

The department started since the inception of college in 1990 at B.A. & B.Sc. level. Geography as a principal subject is commenced in academic year 1992-93. The department provides quality education & realizes its responsibilities towards society. The courses taught in Geography provide the base for national integration and management of disaster. Department faculties provide guidance to students for competitive exams, Pedagogy achieved through field work, Regular visit of experts to guide the students, Department results are near to 100% every year. Faculty helps to farmer about water management. Regularly conducting study tour for students to realize what they study in classroom.

Past students of this department are holding different positions in different fields. Some of them are working as lecturers & teachers in senior, junior colleges & in schools also. Some of our students are working in the field of remote sensing & Geographical Information System. Department of Geography has actively engaged in various activities with the help of student representatives in the following Programmes:-

  • Paper cuttings & articles on recent environment & geography related issues are put on display board, students read them & discuss amongst them.
  • Slide shows, Film shows & PowerPoint presentations are arranged for the students, which help them in knowing different landforms & agricultural patterns.
  • The department arranges socio-economic & geographical surveys of the villages. Staff members explain the methodology. The intention of this type of fieldwork is to develop research ability in the students.
  • Department of Geography also arranges lectures of eminent personalities on different subjects related to geography.
  • Department arranges short & long tours for students, so as to expose them to natural environment. Students visit different places of geographical importance. In the field visit, different landforms are shown to them. While traveling, they are supposed to note down the various changes in the climate, relief, soil type, rock, natural vegetation, cropping patterns & identification of Physical features with the help of Toposheet, Aerial Photographs, Satellite images & GPS instrument. Students also visit different urban centers & study the urban patterns of development & their problems.

  • To provide access to the widest possible range of sources of knowledge.
  • To make students Environment Conscious.
  • To provide an environment in which all members of the department can enhance their skills and apply them to a wide range of theoretical and practical problems in the service of the wider community.

Objectives of the Department:

  • To provide a broad understanding of the study of geography and of the works of the geographers.
  • To develop students’ abilities in field-based investigations of geographical phenomena.
